How's That verschijnt tijdens het cricketseizoen wekelijks

Redactioneel

Tobias Maessen
Secretaris VRA

Match report VRA 1 vs HCC, 5/5

After a fitness-intensive preparation punctuated by convincing wins over Aberdeenshire and last year's beaten finalists Quick Haag, the Fluffers were in a confident frame of mind heading into the first game of the 2016 season. Their one pre-season blip had come in the form of a close loss to newly promoted HCC, so everyone was switched on to overturn that result as the season proper got under way against the same opposition.

The VRA first team are a different beast this season. 2015 pro and coach BJ "long live the 3 crater" Barnett has been unable to return due to dual shoulder and confidence reconstruction operations. Likewise Matthew "Butler Buddy" Klashovski, whose outstanding commitment also resulted in an off-season operation. Paceman Sohail Bhatti opted for a change of clubs during the winter, with an offer to take over from Australian Alex Ross as Excelsior's fielding coach too good to pass up. Last but not least, Sachin "Usher" Peiris has decided to take a break from cricket to focus on his studies and body, while fellow Sri Lankan Amil "Boxer" Prasad will remain at home this year due to visa issues.

In their place, Kiwi-Dutchman Fred Klaassen received a warm welcome only to immediately snap a bowling finger while dropping a catch and earn an 8 week break. In a straight swap for Peiris, model opener Ruben van der Berg has slotted nicely into Amsterdam culture and looks a promising find, while strapping fast bowlers Jeroen “The Administrator” Mulder and Sadiq “Thalys” Mahmood won't have any problems running through a few top orders.

Back to Game One. Captain and new coach Peter Borren won the toss on a beautiful morning and elected to bat, sending the evergreen Adeel "Cricket Europe" Raja and Ruben "are you for scuba?" van der Berg out to open. A solid if unspectacular partnership of 32 was broken when Raja was caught behind, and wickets then fell regularly to leave the Fluffers at 5-91 despite a promising debut innings from Ashwin "slow Dhoni" Oppu.

Enter Quirijn "G1" Gunning to join talisman Borren in a salvage operation. The pair batted brilliantly against a quality bowling attack to add 87 for the 6th wicket, ticking all the boxes available to them in the process. When G1 was dismissed for a precious but un-Cricket Europe worthy 33 Borren charged on, taking little notice of his team mates' inability to stick with him. The captain was eventually dismissed for 93 off the last ball of the innings, having almost single handedly (the assistance of Gunning aside) hauled the Fluffers to 219 off their allotted 50 overs.

At half time it was a fairly confident dressing room. The boys knew that chasing 220 is a daunting task on an early season outfield at VRA and were confident that with some very reasonable athleticism the score would be defended. The cricket gods and the HCC top order thought differently though, using a combination of luck, determination, poor fielding, and a generous non-appeal from VRA royalty Mulder to negotiate fiery opening spells from Gunning and Mahmood. The first wicket was finally captured by Mahmood in the 10th over, bringing South African Jonathan Vandiar to the crease. A streaky start induced a scathing assessment of “not a real pro” from an unnamed ginger fast bowler, but Vandiar did come good for HCC, striking the ball well despite the constant attentions of van der Berg to take the visitors to a seemingly match winning position of 1-147.

But the Fluffers are made of sterner stuff this season. The jongens refused to lie down, promptly taking 5-24 to wrest back control and leave HCC reeling at 6-171. It could have been, should have been, and oh so nearly was 7-171 – and effectively game over – but for a catastrophic dropped catch by Zoolander, standing at the unfamiliar position of slip for Borren. The let-off for HCC no.8 JZ-X van Kessel was a fatal blow, and a 37 run partnership for the 7th wicket, highlighted by a display of passion from Gunning that could only be seen as an attempt to end comparisons with mild-mannered lookalike Ned Flanders, saw the visitors take the match with 9 balls and 3 wickets to spare.

The close loss was far from an embarrassment for the Fluffers, who fought hard against a team tipped to finish towards the top of the table this season. Nevertheless, the disappointment was pronounced after twice fighting back from the brink only to let the match slip once our noses were finally in front. A fielding improvement will be crucial as the Fluffers take on perennial strugglers Hermes on their “pitch” next up. The result, as usual, is tipped to rest on the productivity of Stephan Myburgh’s bat. Stay tuned, and go the Fluffers!

Match report U9b vs Qui Vive, 8/5

Narrow defeat for VRA U9B in season opener.

Time: 10:00 am on Sunday 8 May, Place: Sportpark De Eendracht, Amsterdam West. Match: Qui Vive U9 v VRA U9B Format: Smash cricket 16 overs per team (game was shortened) Result: VRA U9B:- 199. Qui Vive U9:- 219. Qui Vive win by 20 runs

On one of the hottest days of the year so far VRA U9B went down to a narrow defeat to Qui Vive U9 on adjusted scores after a shortened game of Smash cricket.

VRA won the toss and elected to bat. Bram and Oscar opened the batting and made a steady start to the innings in their 4 overs. Karel and Sidney then had a productive partnership with Karel scoring a notable 16 runs. Flip and Edward continued the momentum and the closing overs saw Atharva and Abrar scoring consistently including several boundaries.

At the end of the 16 overs VRA had scored 134 runs including bonus runs for wides and no balls.

VRA then took to the field to defend their total. Good work with the ball and in the field by Mahdiya, Shaheer and Dijntje kept the run rate down. However Qui Vive made excellent use of the 'free hit' rule allowing them to score some important boundaries. Atharva took 2 excellent catches in the deep to keep the scoring in check. The game was looking close but in the last 2 overs some big hitting by Qui Vive produced 32 runs and the game swung decisively in their favour. Sadly time constraints meant that Qui Vive' s innings was reduced to 13 overs.

At the end of the 13 overs Qui Vive had scored 133 runs including no balls and wides.

After adding in 5 bonus runs for every wicket taken and then adjusting the scores for the shortened Qui Vive innings the final scores were:-

VRA:- 199. Qui Vive:- 219. Qui Vive win by 20 runs.

Congratulations to Qui Vive for their victory in an excellent game.

Our thanks go to Qui Vive for hosting the match and laying on the lunch. Also of course thanks to all the enthusiastic support from the parents/carers of the VRA players.

Match report U10 vs Rood&Wit, 8/5

VRA U10 welcomed their counterparts from Rood en Wit on a glorius morning in the Amsterdamse Bos for their season opening game.

Rood en Wit won the toss and elected to field first. Fresh from their introductions intro Smash Cricket rules, the sides started enthousiastiy, with opening VRA batters Aarham and Lars picking their singles tactically, mixed with the occasional boundary scoring 28 from their allotted 4 overs. Their successors Olivier and Klaas continued momentum with a solid 35 runs off 4. Mats and Caspar batted well, with sensible running between the wickets culminating into 23 off the ensuing 4 overs. In a final burst of 29 runs Morris and Vince helped VRA to end their innings (with extras) on 153 runs.
Rood en Wit batted with 2 men short, and received assistance from VRA super sub Josh and some helpful fielders. VRA bowling was somewhat inconsistent with sporadic well directed balls mixed with wayward bowling. Clearly an area requiring some coaching attention in coming weeks. VRA fielding deserves complimenting with committed boundary stops, catching and well directed throwing to the stumps resulting in a number of Rood en Wit run outs. The free-hit rule did require getting used to, though the team grasped this quickly. Well done!

The combination of skills and never-say-quit attitude pulled VRA through with a final score of 208 runs(16overs) against the 197 of Rood en Wit. A well deserved 11 run victory. Key to their was the 11 wickets they took securing an addition 55 bonus points!

With plenty to build in from this game and a few players to join the squad, we look forward to the next game. Well done team!

Match report VRA U14 vs Kampong (away), 8/5

VRA won the toss and elected to bowl first. Kampong batted really well and made 232 in 30 overs. VRA made mistakes in the field because, they had given a lot of runs away, dropped 2 important wickets at the start. Kampong profited of VRA's mistakes and received a lot of wides. After that VRA bowled good and made less mistakes. We took 5 wickets and we didn't gave a lot of runs away.

Udit & Aryan had a good opening partnership of 81 runs. After the first wicket was fallen of Aryan, VRA got again in trouble and didn't look wel in running-between-wickets. After Udit was retired Gwen,Trinabh and Julius came and hitted some great fours, but it wasn't enough to get over the runs that Kampong made, and VRA ended up with 179 runs losing the match.

Best regards,
Aryan Kumar

Match report Zami 2 vs Ajax Leiden, 7/8
