Pavillion and ground
The club has top line cricketing facilities including grass pitches on the main field. The VRA home ground is the only triple AAA rated wicket on mainland Europe. Paul Polak is our grounds man who was responsible for preparing the World Cup wicket in 1999. The second field across from our main oval will be used by all teams. We also have a third ground 150 metres from the home ground that caters for our league games when we have three teams playing at home on a Sunday. The club also has three Astroturf cricket nets when training is conducted. VRA has an incredible balcony terrace that is the envy of the cricketing world. The sun and the backdrop over the fields to Amsterdam forest is really something to enjoy in summer while tucking into a famous VRA BBQ. In the summer it stays warm deep into the night and several big parties are arranged at the club - like the Midsummernightstump one day 25 over-a-side (that has 6 teams playing on three fields and over 150 guests going until 4am), with steel bands, DJ's and Cocktail bars. Expats have never been afraid to enjoy the social side of things and many of the Dutch members say that the current crop of expats have added another social spectrum to the club. The problem is that they are starting to cop a bit of a backlash from the wives/girlfriends club wanting to know why their husbands/boyfriends are rolling in at 2 or 3am from a game that finished at 6pm! That is the power of the social side! The social side isn't restricted to the players. Quite often you will see a large contingent of players family and friends enjoying the cricket and VRA hospitality. From relaxing under the trees or on the benches to soaking up the sun on the terrace, VRA caters for cricketing fans from all over Holland. The Dutch have a wonderful word to describe such enjoyable atmospheres - 'Gezellig'. The VRA clubhouse and terrace is most definitely Gezellig right throughout summer. We have SKY Sports on the big screen TV down at our clubhouse. We saw every single ball bowled during the Cricket World Cup (when games weren't concurrent of course) and will be showing all kinds of sport from all over the globe including Super 12 Rugby, live English domestic cricket and the English summers internationals, Tri Nations Rugby, World Cup rugby and more and more - all LIVE at the one place. Sick of not being able to hear or watch at your local pub - VRA Cricket Club has it all uninterrupted all day, every day. So come on down and check it out, and hopefully you'll want to join up! |
