In een grijs verleden, toen ik in ons eerste zelf nog een balletje mocht bowlen (voor sommigen om duistere redenen) stond ons elftal nog al eens met de terug tegen de muur.
Misschien had dat ook te maken met dat ‘balletje bowlen’ van mij: Henk Klink zei altijd ‘Vader vergeef het hem, hij weet niet wat hij bowlt’
Hoe dan ook, ik heb meerdere malen in totaal uitzichtloze situaties en zonder medeweten van mijn aanvoerder, de tegenpartij remise aangeboden (de draw bestond toen nog) )Gek genoeg gingen ze nooit op mijn groothartig aanbod in. Een voor de hand liggende verklaring is in deze gerechtvaardigd: er zitten nauwelijks schakers tussen ons cricketvolkje.
Maar goed, in een nog grijzer verleden gingen de heren met de trein naar de uitwedstrijden. Als je mazzel had werd het elftal opgewacht door de jeugd van de tegenpartij die de bags naar het clubhuis brachten, tegen een geringe vergoeding naar ik aanneem. De heren gingen vervolgens koffie drinken in een lokaal etablissement. Na de wedstrijd en natuurlijk vele pilsen moest er overnacht worden, want de laatste trein was (ook toen al) vertrokken.
Maar er was ter stede nog veel meer pils en daarvan werd uitbundig ingenomen waardoor één van de spelers aanzienlijk boven zijn theewater en aan het eind van zijn Latijn geraakte. Echter de weg naar het hotel was hem onbekend en hij vroeg advies aan zijn elftalgenoten.
‘Of hij een wandelstok had?’ Had hij. Zet die dan maar in de tramrails, rechtuit dan kom je vanzelf langs het hotel. Waar ze hem de volgende ochtend terugvonden? Juist ja…..in de
remise.

CRICKET

Cricketers en fans beschouwen Cricket als de mooiste sport op de wereld. Waarom?
Zij begrijpen, hoe het Cricket spel gespeeld wordt. Het is een spel van techniek, tactiek en “spirit”.

VRA heeft een visie voor de toekomst. Haar beleid is mede gericht om jeugd een goede training en begeleiding te geven. Jonge talenten kunnen daardoor goed worden opgeleid. De club voorziet de Jeugd training van allerlei faciliteiten.

Welke termen moet iedere jeugdige cricketer kennen?
a. Het Wicket heet Pitch. Het kan van turf of gras gemaakt zijn.
De lengte van de pitch is 22.56 m.
b. De wickets zijn 71.1 cm hoog en 22.86 cm breed
c. De cricket bal weegt ongeveer 5, 5 English onces.
d. Het cricket bat is gemaakt van wilgenhout
e. Het mag niet langer zijn dan 38 inches en het “blade” mag niet breder zijn dan 4.25 inches.
f. Het gewicht van een cricket bat varieert van weegt 2 lbs 8 oz tot 3.1 lbs ( engelse pounds), ofschoon er eigenlijk geen begrenzingen zijn.
g. Om het “handle” zit meestal rubber.
h. De umpires zijn door de Cricket bonden aangesteld en gekwalificeerd om te kunnen “Umpiren” in de match. De umpire controleert of het een goed wicket is, kijkt ook naar de conditie van het veld…..bijvoorbeeld als het geregend heeft, dan mag er niet gespeeld worden, want dan kan men uitglijden. Ook als er “bad light “is…dan zal de umpire de wedstrijd staken, maar altijd in overleg met de captains van beide teams.
i. Batsmen can be out: Bowled, Hit wicket, Caught or Catch, LBW ( leg before wicket),Caught behind wicket ( by the wicket keeper), Run out or Stumped, Handled the ball with hand, caught and bowled.
j. Bowler: A ball must not be Thrown or Jurk ( werpen).
k. Vermijdt No-balls and wide-balls.
l. De bowler moet de umpire informeren hoe hij zal bowlen: Over the wicket or round the wicket.
m. Een bowler moet een goede “bowling action en follow through”hebben.
n. Bowl nooit een Beamer, anders krijg je een waarschuwing van de Umpire. Het is nl. zeer gevaarlijk voor de batsman.
o. Abdominal guard betekent “Toque”
p. Thighpads worden gebruikt om de dij te beschermen. Er zijn ook pads die de elleboog beschermen.
q. De bowler mag nooit na bowling delivery met zijn voeten over het wicket terug rennen, want zo beschadigt hij de “batting area”.

Ik denk, dat jullie voor deze week weer genoeg termen hebben geleerd. Denk er om…..volgende Practice in de Kooi……wil ik weten of jullie deze termen kennen. Ik zal jullie dan precies uitleggen wat het is.

VRA II

2 - Kampong, or was it going to be another VRA 2 v Cantrell?
VRA 2 had a good batting side (although not always a guarantee for success) and a good mix of bowlers.
We set out with Bob Jan and Anjum opening the batting, with Anjum leaving the middle after an over or two. Bob Jan carried on with Rens. Rens, the birthday boy, is not the youngest of men anymore: his eye sight didn't help him see the full toss which hit his wicket. Ahmed joined Bobn Jan, and Ahmed did what he is good at: making big scores. In the already blistering heat he scored 60 runs, before being trapped LBW. Bob Jan had already left the middle with a decent 19 behind his name. Sanjay and Christof batted on, Sanjay giving good advice to the youngster and in the meantime scoring 30 plus runs. Christof then built a partnership with Ellery, before he went plumb LBW (scoring 40, congrats!). Ellery and Daniel made the score board tick all they way up to 230.

Their batting got off to the same bad start we we had: within four overs they were tow down. Cantrell looked the same solid self as always, but Juriaans speed made him leave the pitch with only 10 runs behind his name. Sidhu put on a big fight, scoring 70 in the end.
very good bowling from Ellery (again...) and Rens, picking up 7 wickets between the two of them.
After taking their 7th wicket, they needed approx 8 an over, which was a bit too much for the 4 men left: 210 was the end.

This was a win well deserved, proving that we can put up a fight and play very decent cricket, good enough for this league. We will need this confidence as we'll be facing VVV (away in Deventer) and R&W (away in Haarlem) this weekend, before we finish off against Hercules at home.

VRA LADIES WON BY 1 WICKET

WARM!!!! Better said: SUPERWARMMMM!!! Dat is een goede omschrijving van afgelopen zaterdag. We moesten tegen Quick Haag en willen dat dan ook altijd winnen. Andere wedstrijden ook wel, maar deze was speciaal aangezien zij bovenaan stonden in de competitie.
Nadat onze BAAS de toss had gedaan moesten wij fielden. Instructies waren duidelijk, no wides!
Over het algemeen werd er wel goed gebowled en gefield. Rond de 20ste over viel het eerste wicket. Uiteindelijk kwamen ze in 45 overs op een totaal van 160, 20/30 runs meer dan verwacht. Maar dat kan ook heel goed gelegen hebben aan het aantal extra's, waar wij nog zeker aan moeten werken.
161 leek heel haalbaar alleen moest er wel rustig begonnen worden. Het batten begon alleen niet zoals gehoopt. Goede scores van Maartje en Sally, 32 resp. 54. We waren op weg naar de 161 alleen vielen er meer wickets dan gewenst. De partnership van de twins kwam dan ook op een goed tijdstip en was meer dan nuttig. Samen hadden de zusjes Huygen een 6th-wicket partnership van 30 runs. Toen Annemarie uit ging volgden de anderen haar ook al snel. Het aantal ballen kwam snel dichterbij het aantal nodige runs. Het leek "net echt". Toen ik als last lady in mocht waren er nog 5 ballen te gaan waarvan we 2 runs moesten maken. EN natuurlijk geen wicket! Heleen was on-strike, ze sloeg de bal en we renden de required 2 runs dankzij een misfield ! GEWONNENNNN!!!!! Heleen ging not out met 16 runs en ik had de eer not out te gaan without any balls faced. Als je iets doet dan moet je het goed doen, met 30 C betekent dat winnen. Nog eff wat bowlingci

HCC Zami - VRA Zami 2 259 ao - 118 ao

On the way to the Hague there was heavy rain so we had mobile contact with the guys from HCC1 if the game was still on and we decided to have a at least a cup of coffee if the game was to be called off. And what came for them as a surprise the sun came and the sky cleared, this is normal for us (happy people happy..... ). I think the the game had a few highlights, Diederik`s and Guido`s bowling, and Rowan`s Batting. These where in my opinion the only highlights in a sportive way. I know we alway`s have highlights before and after the game. And these highlights are every week the same: 9 people, can`t find the ground, "I just left home" call`s at 13:00 Hours, and "I don`t feel well" phone call`s. I wanna take this opportunity to thank Rowan for all his runs made for our team and hope he will still play a few games next year for us. We wish you all the best in Eindhoven and hope to see you down at the grounds for a few "Kouwe kletsers".

Specialistentraining
The specialist coaching on Tuesdays and Fridays will not take place during the holiday period. We will advise when the next specialist training will take place.

Stedencompetitie

The stedencompetitie is now underway, and Amsterdam has teams for U18, U15 and U13. Please advise Darrin Murray (06-46246074 or darrin.murray@brannigans.co.nz) if you are available for any matches over the next three weekends.

U-9 and F - Circus

We will have coaches available for any of the F-circus and U9 players who want to come to VRA on Saturday mornings during the holiday period.

VRA 1 - ACC 1 - 281 v 5 - 169 ao

VRA 1 281 for 5 in 50 Overs / ACC 1 169 a.o. in 40 Overs

After offering do to a match report earlier in the season and getting away with it due to a rained off match, Rod reminded me of my responsibilities and with large smile, chucked the scorebook at me late on Sunday evening.

Since the break the team has been very determined to try and play to its potential and after a good victory over HCC the previous week, ACC were convincingly beaten by 112 runs at ACC’s new ground. It was probably our most complete performance for the season and nice to be able to do it in the local derby. Luckily Joost was able to win the toss as none of us fancied fielding in middle of the day when the temperatures were going to be at their highest.

After Maupie van Nierop was unfortunately run out for 20 after a mix up with Tjade (nonetheless Tjade had no hesitation in fining Maupie for not making 50!), Eric and Tjade put together a 90 run stand in only 19 overs. Tjade was out to Aponso for 51 (therefore just avoiding a fine!) with his runs coming form only 56 balls. Eric also went on to make his second half century of the season in scoring 52. I think both Tjade and Eric cleverly decided it was too hot to bat for a long time and in typical Dutch fashion, got past the fine zone and headed back to the pavilion to put their feet up!

Adeel got a chance to bat up the order and joined myself to put on 95 for the 4th wicket in 13 overs. Adeel played some magnificent shots in getting to 49 form just 42 balls (naturally he was fined) which included 2 sixes over mid wicket. It was good that Adeel could take some pressure off me as I, unlike Tjade and Eric, had not worked out that it was too hot to be batting for more than 20 overs! We finally got to 281, our highest score ever against ACC (according to Rod) and I finished on 70 not out from 77 balls.

281 was always going to very difficult for ACC, who currently sit at the bottom of the table. Joost took the early wicket of Aponso and Rashid already had the ball reverse swinging in the 10th over. Rahid took two wickets in his 3rd over which left ACC at 69 for 4 after 17 overs. Despite a partnership of 75 for the 5th wicket, we were generally in control of the match and once that partnership was broken the last 5 wickets fell for 25 runs. The ACC coach, Hendrikse, played very well for 74 but there was very little support from the other batsman. Rajhsid took 4 for 19 from 6 overs and Victor and Paul both picked up two wickets. One of the highlights of the fielding display was our David Boon lookalike (Maupie van Nierop) taking a brilliant diving catch at midwicket off Victor. Boonie is obviously taking his new nickname seriously by setting fielding standards that the Australian team would be proud of!

Special mention to Ed who probably carted at least 100 litres of water onto the field during the day, including doing the drinks for the ACC side as well! We even helped out ACC with Wim doing the scoreboard. Hopefully ACC can find a few wins in their last games to give them a chance of avoiding relegation as their new ground and pavilion is first class.
