Begonnen!

Nadat een klein aantal getrouwen tijdens de Algemene Ledenvergadering op 16 april zich lang vergaderend had gebogen over VRA in verleden, heden en toekomst, is afgelopen weekeinde het seizoen dan eindelijk echt begonnen. Natuurlijk, de Zami's en hun nieuwe halfbroertjes de Zomi's staan al vanaf half april in een blakend zonnetje te ballen en wisten zelfs onze oudste jeugd te verleiden tot een oefenpot, maar met het begin van de Hoofdklasse en een optreden van het Eerste, wordt als het ware het officiële lint plechtig doorgeknipt.
Een plechtig begin kende ook de eerste competitiewedstrijd tussen ACC en VRA. Voorafgaand aan deze ontmoeting werd door beide teams en hun begeleiders stilgestaan bij het overlijden van Maurits van Nierop. In aanwezigheid van zijn ouders en andere familieleden werd een minuut stilte in acht genomen en VRA-voorzitter Ed van Nierop sprak enkele woorden. Een sober en waardig moment, dat op alle aanwezigen diepe indruk maakte. VRA dankt ACC en de umpires die deze herdenking vlak voor de wedstrijd toestonden. Zeker dient hier vermeld te worden, dat onze Zami-mannen op soortgelijke wijze Maurits hebben herdacht voor de aanvang van hùn eerste echte wedstrijd.

Vele regels zijn er in de verschillende media al aan het komende seizoen gewijd. Vooral de verscherpte degradatieregeling die leidt tot een kleinere Hoofdklasse gaf vooraf aanleiding tot allerlei speculaties. Zelfs cricketschuwe dagbladen stelden hun kolommen open voor het exotische cricket en obscure tv-rubrieken hadden zelfs een itempje over dat malle gedoe met bat en bal!
Wordt het allemaal zo spannend als werd gesuggereerd door vele kenners? Als je afgaat op de resultaten van de eerste ronde lijkt die verwachting wel gerechtvaardigd. VRA, HCC en VOC gingen zondag de mist in en het is toch wel een opvallend gezicht, om ACC de ranglijst te zien aanvoeren.
Dat het een stevige competitie wordt lijkt mij zeker, maar VRA heeft met de nieuwe aanwinsten Gerrie Snyman, Ben Goedegebuur en Atse Buurman, onze trouwe ervaren campaigners en aanstormend talent een goed gebalanceerd elftal, waarmee terdege rekening moet worden gehouden.
Het was overigens goed te zien, dat een aardig aantal VRA-supporters de vrieskou had getrotseerd, om onze jongens aan te moedigen. En nu maar wachten op de zomer.

Startproblemen voor VRA1

Of het nu aan de ijzige temperatuur lag, weet ik niet, maar ons Eerste heeft afgelopen zondag zijn eerste wedstrijd verloren. Zwak batten in de lower en middle order zorgde ervoor, dat VRA steeds achter de feiten aanliep en met de grootste moeite de wedstrijd tot het einde toe een beetje spannend kon houden.
En daarbij was het allemaal redelijk goed begonnen.
Onder invloed van de ODI regels, die voortkomen uit het streven van de ICC om van alle cricketers echte kerels te maken, wordt tegenwoordig een miezerig regentje niet meer als serieuze bedreiging van de spelvreugde gezien en zo kon het gebeuren, dat na de indrukwekkende herdenking van Maurits, twee al bij voorbaat verkleumde teams begonnen aan de eerste van zes Amsterdamse Hoofdklasse derbies. ACC uit is altijd lastig, want het steeds prettiger ogende veld is voorzien van een pitch, waar soms wat vreemde bounces - of juist het gebrek daaraan - uit voortkomen. Maar daar heeft iedereen last van en deze onverwachte wendingen zijn goed voor de amusementswaarde, zullen we maar zeggen.
ACC won de toss en ging fielden en nam daarmee het ongemak van een natte bal voor lief, ten faveure van vermeend tactisch voordeel. Vinoo Tewarie en Wesley Barresi begonnen uitstekend en met doordacht batten werd een aardige openingsstand van 50 op het bord gebracht. Farouk Bukhari en Ghaznavi M. bowlden mooi tight en op 55 werd Wesley op cover uiterst laag bij de grond gevangen. Wesley vroeg Umper Ruchtie of de bal wel had gecarried, maar de goede man was niet geïnteresseerd en dus was de stand 55 voor 1.
Wat toen volgde was een trieste opeenvolging van zwakke momenten. Eerst vlogen Vinoo de palen om de oren; een paar runs later speelde Eric Scwarczynski een bal van Udo in zijn stumps; daarna werd Gerrie Snyman 'ongelukkig' caught behind gegeven, ging Atse Buurman achteruit op een lange van Udo en weer drie runs later bleef een bal van Ghaznavi M. dodelijk laag voor Peter Borren. Stand: 76 voor 6!
Met Adeel Raja en Zaheer Butt(14) ging het wat beter en met name de innings van Adeel zorgde ervoor, dat VRA nog een totaal te verdedigen had.
Met een opmerkelijk verstandig battende Victor Grandia(20) werkte hij aan het herstel, maar nadat Victor de bal toch naar deep square had gelepeld, verslikte hij zich vlak na het bereiken van zijn vijftig in een mooie bal van de in de aanval teruggebrachte Mudassar Bukhari en de ban was gebroken: 166 v 9. Met wat moedig kruimelwerk van Mangesh Panchal en Ben Goedegebuur wist VRA toch nog 176 runs te vergaren en niemand wist wat dat op dit veld - en deze pitch - waard was. Farouk Bukhari had met 4 voor 23 goed gebowld en Xander Udo was met 2 voor 17 verrassend gevaarlijk geweest.
ACC begon niet goed. Een noodschot van Ghaznavi S. op een venijnige bal van Gerrie werd door Vinoo bekwaam op mid wicket gevangen en het was meteen duidelijk, dat Gerrie wat vlugger gooit dan de meesten gewend zijn.
Aan de andere kant werd het expiriment van Adeel als opening spinner stevig afgestraft: 15 runs tegen in 2 overs is wel wat duur! Ryan Maron, gebrand op een goed resultaat tegen zijn oude club, batte zeer geconcentreerd en samen met Zulfiqar ging de score flink omhoog. Maar net toen hij echt gesetteld was en 20 runs op zijn naam had, zorgde een klassieke JA/NEE situatie op het midden van de pitch voor een vroegtijdige afgang. Een strakke ingooi van Adeel Raja en keeper Atse Buurman had weinig moeite de palen op tijd te vellen. Ryan was niet blij, kan ik u verzekeren!
Zulfiqar Ahmed had nu wat goed te maken en samen met Bas van der Heijden bracht hij met aggressief spel en soms wat onorthodoxe schoten de stand naar de 100. Zulfiquar strandde op 78 (7x4) toen Victor Grandia hem met een mooie bal wist te bowlen, maar de stand was inmiddels opgelopen tot 135. Van der Heijden(18) batte geduldig verder, maar werd het slachtoffer van een laagblijvende Goedegebuur-bal. Exchangespeler Hoare werd simpel door Vinoo gevangen op mid on op het bowlen van Victor en Ollie Lodder kon maar niet geloven dat hij de bal van Mangesh Panchal achterom in de grote handen van Atse had gespeeld. Op 165 voor 7 begonnen de ACC-toeschouwers hem toch een beetje te knijpen. Faroek Bukhari maakte met 20 harde runs (3 x 4) echter met nog 5 ballen te gaan een einde aan de wedstrijd en leverde daarmee een prima all-roundprestatie. Het bowlen van VRA was de hele innings goed verzorgd geweest, maar het te verdedigen totaal was simpelweg te laag gebleken.
Snijman was nog niet op zijn gevaarlijkst met 1 voor 29 uit 10 (met 3 maidens), Goedegebuur en Panchal hadden ieder een wicket voor resp. 33 uit 8 en 25 uit 6, maar het best bowlde good-old Victor Grandia, die met 3 voor 27 uit 10 beloond werd voor zijn uitstekende inspanning.
Zondag tegen Hermes kunnen we laten zien, dat we ook een beetje kunnen batten. Ik verheug me er op!

kleedkamers. Deze schone start is heel mooi, maar schoon houden is de
volgende stap. Jullie kunnen daar veel in betekenen door met jullie
teams de kleedkamers schoon achter te laten. Het zelf schoonmaken,
zoals aangekondigd tijdens de ALV, is van de baan, dus het is
eigenlijk niet meer dan je eigen rommel in de prullenbak doen en je
gasten/tegenstanders te vragen dit ook te doen.
Ik reken op jullie medewerking, vragen of opmerkingen zijn altijd
welkom!

VRA-junioren in Dutch Lions selecties

U12
Willem Horsman en Kirandeep Singh zijn geselecteerd voor het Dutch Lions U12 team, dat van 2 tot en met 8 augustus gaat deelnemen aan het Cricket Festival op King’s College in Taunton, Engeland.
U14
Arsalan Khan is uitgenodigd om mee te gaan met de Dutch Lions U14, die een tour gaan maken van 27 juli t/m 1 augustus naar Geerhardt de Grooth in het Engelse Bradwell on Sea.
U15
Dhruv Sarma maakt deel uit van de Dutch Lions U15 die in Dundee in Schotland gaan strijden om het Europees Kampioenschap. Dit EK vindt plaats van 18 - 25 juli.
U17
De Dutch Lions U17 nemen deel aan het Europees Kampioenschap van 26 juli - 2 augustus in Belfast. In de selectie is VRA vertegenwoordigd met Nick Wories en Vinoo Tewarie.

Hallelujah, the long dark painful off-season is over! New groundsman Martin Hill’s pitch set a picture-perfect stage for the season to open on a day so clear and sunny that it would have been remarkable for July, let alone April. Floris unilaterally appointed Louis Collignon as field captain for the day and explained the necessity, this being a demonstration match, of tucking shirts into trousers.
The Zamis took to the field first to demonstrate their main strength: missing catches. All forms of this Zami art were exhibited: avoiding a fine edge at first slip (Hintzen), spilling a square edge at gully (Mulder), misjudging a skied slog at fine leg (Browning), dropping an overhead lob in the covers (Fowler), standing too close for a cow-corner boundary (Yisrael), and missing a caught-and-bowled volley (Dekkers).
The under-18s were tied down at first, managing only around three runs per over for the first 15 overs from Paul McPhillimy (5-1-19-0), Phil Yisrael (5-2-10-2) and Jeroen Mulder (6-0-26-0). Neil’s Kal-oz-nikov arm created the first breakthough, shattering the stumps from afar to run out Pargat for 14 runs, bringing Mark to the crease. The run rate increased as consistently tight seam gave way to variably wayward spin from Browning (4-0-31-1), Fowler (6-0-43-1), Dekkers (5-0-26-0), Collignon (4-0-19-1) and Richardson (4-0-13-1). These bowlers’ minds were willing, but their rusty bodies didn’t always co-operate. All agreed on the value of such practice matches to re-tune the Zami machine that has seized up over the winter. What hadn’t seized up was wicket-keeper John Reardon’s jaw, which merrily commented, encouraged, jested and sledged before, during and after every ball.
U-18 notched up a total of 192 with notable contributions from Khalid who succumbed on 40 to the season’s first Fowler Howler, caught on the boundary by Dekkers; Leon Turmaine who retired after making 50 almost exclusively from fluid straight drives; and Tom who also retired with 41.
Ruth and Patrick started the season with the high-tea equivalent of a century and five wickets. Zami hoped that the generous spread of bacon, eggs, sandwiches, French bread, apple pie, donuts, Madeira cake, and chocolate cookies would slow down the U-18s, but it wasn’t to be the case.
Mike George and Phil Yisrael opened for the Zamis, building a solid opening partnership before Phil was bowled by Khalid for 17. Mike followed the U-18 example, retiring unbeaten when he reached his half century, bringing John Reardon to the crease to join Neil Browning. After waiting two hours to bat, John was back in the pavilion in two minutes, unluckily run out for 2 by a direct hit. Nick Fowler nearly fell to the same fate on his first ball as Vinoo Tewarie’s run out attempt narrowly missed the stumps, but instead hit Nick in the box as he scrambled over the line.
The target was slowly slipping away from the Zamis. The required run rate per over crept up from its starting point of below 5 to 6, 7 and then 8. Valiant attempts to achieve the target successively resulted in the losses of Neil (caught and bowled for 30) and Toon (LBW for a duck as he tried to hit the ball to Schiphol). Paul McPhillimy (11 Not out) and Nick Fowler (27 not out) closed the Zami account 18 runs short of the target at the end of the 40th over. This is a credit to the following U-18 bowlers who slowly but surely choked the Zamis: T Passierowski (8-0-26-1), Sharma (4-1-16-0), P Passierowski (7-1-34-0), Khalid (5-1-16-0), Turmaine (5-1-17-0), Swan (3-0-11-0), Tewarie (5-0-13-0), R.Kappelle (3-0-22-0) and Monis (1-0-7-0).
Vinoo Tewarie, the U18 captain, is to be congratulated on a double victory. First, he ensured that U-18 won the match. Second, he did so by giving as many of his team-mates as possible an opportunity to play, regardless of their talent or experience, thereby rising to the occasion and showing that every player’s contribution is as valuable as the performance of the more talented.

CC. Ducks zorgt voor aanwas

Op het terras van ons clubhuis bivakkeert al geruime tijd een eendenmevrouw die kennelijk veel van ons spel houdt. Zij trotseert het gezelschap van U 7 tot en met U 18, Zami's en Zomi's en wat er nog meer onze velden onveilig maakt en werkt onverstoorbaar aan haar offspring.
Of zij straks een compleet elftal in het veld brengt?

A fine spring day greeted the players as all and sundry turned up to host the players of Optiver. Well once the sundry were cast aside, Toon Hintzen and Ruurt Schreuder, kindly opting for table sanding, we were almost ready to begin. Optiver, an Amsterdam based financial trading house, captained by Matt McKeogh fielded a team of largely Indian origin, Will an enthusiastic American from Tampa Florida making his cricketing debut, a South African named Deon Veldtman, and Sandeep. With the kind offering of Jeroen Mulder to Optiver we were ready to begin.
VRA elected to bat and John Reardon and Nick Fowler made an enterprising start off some lively bowling. Fowler having played a number of lovely strokes was first to fall for 15 and Reardon was joined at the crease by Tim Ellerton. He and John Reardon put together a partnership of 47 before Ellerton (32) fell to the all too smashable bowling of Matt. Michaelides came to the crease and soon after Reardon was sent back to the pavilion for 44, bowled by the accurate JJ. Michaelides went for 17, and the dashing Aussie Neil Browning took over the mantle compiling an entertaining 42, in the process taking on the bowling which had been lifted by the introduction of Rashid. The innings was capably finished off by Louis Collignon and Captain Anthony Lynch. Louis nearly managed to end the promising career of Nick Fowler as a concert pianist by sending a heat seeker straight back down the wicket collecting umpire Fowler’s hand in the process. Lynch preferred to inflict his damage on the opposition with a towering six and a quick fire 18. The total of 199 was achieved.
A fantastic lunch of sandwiches, cakes and cantaloupe got the players ready for the Optiver innings. The lunch sat well with the opening batsmen and they were off to a flier as VRA struggled for line. After 8 overs Optiver already had 50 on the board and the VRA was in dire need of a break. Michaelides was given the ball and broke the partnership ably assisted by an excellent catch from Neil Browning. Browning bowling from the other end then did all the work to dismiss the number 3 with another excellent catch. Out came the American and looking for his first runs in cricket, but it wasn’t to be as he played on a tame Michaelides delivery and collected a golden duck. Rashid from VRA seconds followed next ball LBW and despite missing the hatrick, it was three in an over as the last of the openers fell for a well made 24. The Greek Freak had the golden arm and picked up another in his next over claiming 5/15 and Optiva were reeling at 6/71. With the match looking like VRA’s for the taking, they were unable to finish off Optiver. With the medium pacers almost out of overs, VRA turned to their spin options. With the exception of Venkat Sarma, the spinners lacked penetration and Deon and JJ punished some often short and wayward bowling. When JJ went for 29 caught by Sander, Optiver still needed 83 to win. Well Jeroen Mulder was the man for the job and put together a match winning innings of 50 (retired) and was ably assisted by Deon with 28. The final runs we knocked off by Matt and Sandeep as they held their nerve to win with 2 overs to spare.

Ook Nathalie in Oranje

VRA's Nathalie Hennis is één van de drie nieuwkomers in het Nederlands Damesteam dat deze zomer mee gaat draaien in de Engelse LV Womens County Championship. Jolet Hartenhof maakt al langer deel uit van de selectie. Tegenstanders in divisie 5 Zuid-West Engeland zijn de volgende counties: Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Dorset, Shropshire en Oxfordshire.

' Zami Army Derby '
Normally the Zami Army Derby attracts much attention, past and present, far and wide. From Sydney in the South (Mugsy and Angel) to Stockholm in the North (Jamie Johnson). However, given the events that unfolded in the final game last season and the fact that this was also the Season Opener for 2009, I was somewhat surprised at the lack of prematch banter and sledging one would half expect for such an event.
Given the fact that training during the week for most players was for the post-match celebrations (following a limited overs Koninginnedag Day/Nighter), perhaps the sweet taste of victory from last season's final still lingering in the Zami 1's mouths had been somewhat dampened by copious amounts of beer, a 'Bitter' taste Zami 2's would be all too familiar with.
For those unfamiliar to the Zami Army Derby, to put things in perspective, i suggest you also read Mugsy's brilliant Match Report 'Battle of the Woods', 30 August 2008).
So, what unfolded (to the best of my recollection):
With some regular stalwarts either away in the UK (Fowler, Spoon) or pooping their pants in Las Vegas (Nobby, Tim) and some new faces stepping up to the podium in their place (Welcome: Sander 'Mini Me' Kempen, Nick 'The New Fowler Howler' Whitworth and Mijndert 'Minehead from the Bacon' Van Der Spek), starting only my third tour of duty in the Zami Army, i kind of felt like a seasoned veteran for this one.
I have no idea who won the toss or if there even was one, but the sun was shining and we (Zami 1) looking to retain the glory, were thrown into the field under the command of Captain Louis Collignon.
On a more important note: a minute silence was taken by the players before starting the match, to commemorate the memory of Maruits van Nierop.
Opening pair for Zami 2 was an interesting contradiction in terms, the young and very expensive Bob-Jan Spits and the one and only iron-fisted "Mein Fuhrer !" corpse with pads Dictator.
Paul McPhillimy (Phil McPaulimy) bowling from the Kalfjeslaan street end and Phil Yisrael from the scoreboard end were given the honours with the new ball.
Suprisingly BJ was the first to go and early, (the man who scored over 600 runs last season at an average of over 50) caught napping at the crease to a low in-swinger from McPaulimy, bowled off his pads for 4 and the Zami 1's in raptures (again).
Up steps Rohan 'Rohanatunga' Lianayage to the crease (the number 3 specialist who spent the off-season producing little Rohanatungas), looked to force the issue. However tight bowling from Yisrael and Paul, forced Rohan into a pressure scoring shot off a McPhillimy slow ball which he skied trying to hit over the infield, a confident catch taken by Michaelides at Midoff.
In next comes Philip Deelen, the man who smashed 10 sixes (and a car window in the process) in a 20/20 match last year. If he got going i knew it could be a long afternoon in the field. Again some tidy spells of bowling from Michaelides and Browning as first changes, scoring was kept to a minimum (albeit with some lovely cover drives from Floris Kappelle mind you). The prize wicket of Deelen fell just before drinks when his leg stump was rattled by a Browning inswinger. Zami 2, 70 for 3 half way through the innings.
Not much else to report about in the batting that was to follow (noughty quackers for number 9,10 and 11), some nice leg glancers from Toon 'The Statue' Hintzen and an unlucky
"YES ....NO....err....SORRY !" run out for Jeroen Mulder (coming off a retired 50 in a warm up match last week). Kappelle finally went out on 32, a solid anchorish knock from the Dictator, showing some glimpses of his glory days.
Some other Bowling contributions to mention. A 1st ball wicket from debutant Sander striding in off a 20 metre 2 step run up and worthy spells from Whitworth (also on debut) and Louis. Even Mike George chipped in at some point with a cheeky 2 wickets for no runs off 1.4 overs. Yes you read that correctly.
But, the accolades of the innings go to the Zami 1 fielding. A big thumbs up to Michel Blokland for his enthusiasm and energy, diving onto the grass at every opportunity and a direct hit Ponting style run-out to finish off the innings by Browning.

The second innings included some fine bowling displays, especially from Geensen and Lobach (who earned himself a controversial wicket when Michaelides was caught behind by Bob-Jan off a full toss), but it was basically a 1 man batting show.
Louis and Mike got things moving nicely to 30 odd for none, until Mike copped a jaffa off-cutter from a speedy Geensen delivery, however first drop Phil Yisrael who was abnormally quiet before the match (and whilst fielding actually), took matters into his own hands with an outstanding, agressive but controlled all-round innings, sealing the victory for Zami 1 in style with a boundary in the 29th over and walking off on 80 not out.
